Hydro-Static Tester |
|
The hydrostatic tester is used to see how much pressure any given object can withstand before leaking, and thus failing. This is the safest way to test tanks as the all liquid static pressure has far less potential energy than high pressure gases do. The grease gun is filled with liquid honey and the pressure vessel and all hoses are completely filled with water. The grease gun handle is used to increase the static pressure by pumping honey into the high pressure hose 1. The pressure is read on the pressure gauges and once the desired test pressure is reached the valve is turned which releases the pressure allowing the system to be disassembled safely. Pressures over 1000 psi can easily be obtained so safety is important. This system can still be dangerous but is much safer than using air pressure to test objects. |

Hydrostatic test of a 2 liter pop bottle. This was tested to 175 psi and could go higher, but the lid leaked a bit of liquid. There is honey visible at the bottom of the bottle. |
